Morstan had followed Sholto to England as soon as he could to demand his share. Overall, a solid Holmes mystery with some classic moments of Sherlockian lore, including the first utterance of the famous truism, "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
During a meeting between Sholto and Morstan, Morstan had suffered a deadly heart attack, and Major Sholto had disposed of the body to avoid any investigation into their relationship. Her father, Captain Morstan, was in India and in charge of a convict regiment along with Major Sholto.
Small tells of how he lost his leg to a crocodile as a young soldier but stayed out in India. Major Sholto had retired to England with a great personal wealth of unknown origin, but had also been fearful for his life, with a particular fear of men with a wooden leg.

It is of course Jonathan Small who is now in possession of the treasure. Along the way, Doyle weaves into the narrative an eclectic assortment of supporting players for Holmes and Watson encounter, including: Watson has been too afraid to stand up to Holmes and ask him to stop.

Watson is more interested in Miss Morstan. I crave for mental exaltation. Holmes asks Sholto questions about his father and finds out that his father seemed to be scared of men with a wooden leg.
Now we are on the bridge. There was no explanatory note with the pearl, but on the day that Mary Morstan had come to Holmes, an anonymous note had been delivered, a note that asked for a meeting.
